Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe 2012.

Many Threads comes alive on the sands of Cottesloe Beach

During March I had the magnificent experience of exhibiting in Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe 2012. The adventure started in Melbourne packing up all the parts of Many Threads to be transported to Perth! We arrived on site to a welcoming team of volunteers and organisers, bringing together this logistical triumph of a free public exhibition.

My site was on the sand below the SLC, utilizing the wooden shade boxes as my suspension points.

We spent 2 full days installing the work, with lots of swims in the ocean to cool down from the heat! We began by building a false ceiling of fishing line and suspension cord, followed by suspending each piece of the work, completed by dug in sand bags for weights.

In this wonderful natural environment Many Threads truly became a live kinetic sculpture; moving, spinning and shaking with breezes and the touches of viewers interacting.

Everyone was extremely positive and welcoming, and I had some great engaging discussions with the public.

While lounging anonymously near my work I heard an array of comments including : “it’s a cats playground”, “ the solar system”, “ Many threads,’Ķthey could unravel any moment “

I was also fortunate to be part of the Alcoa School Education program where I spent the day with 2 school groups aged between 9 and 11. Firstly we visited the sculpture on site to chat about the work, and the students asked questions about the themes, materials and construction. We then did a hands on session working with wool and threads to create a group piece.

I look forward to being a part of Sculpture by the Sea again.
