Cyanotype photography, developed in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, an English mathematician, astronomer, chemist, and experimental photographer/inventor, is a camera-less technique that involves laying an object on paper coated with a solution of iron salts before exposing it to sunlight and washing with water to create stunning white and Prussian blue images.
Mia uses gathered plant specimens and collected ephemera to create unique forms within the cyanotype. These then form the base for her meticulously developed collages. Imagery within the paper is deconstructed, layered, cut, rearranged, inked, glued and reworked. This process allows time to reveal the layers and an atmospheric story to emerge.
Four original collage works create a Symphony in Blue: 1, 2, 3, 4.
